Epistemological Encounters in Multivocal Settings

for e-Book ONLY!) Researchers usually work and evolve in the scientific frameworks in which they were trained, without questioning their epistemological foundations. However, this may be required when researchers coming from different disciplines and paradigms try to work together on the same object of study. This chapter reflects on epistemological encounters in a five-year project of multidisciplinary collaborations in the analysis of interaction. We argue for maintaining diversity of epistemological traditions while either achieving complementarity within explanatory frameworks on different levels or maintaining productive tension. We then present the extent to which researchers in our project and a similar project encountered each other’s epistemologies when they compared their analyses of shared corpora. The majority of comparisons in various contexts led to engagement between epistemologies and some of these epistemological encounters were productive and glitch free, others had difficulties, but still led to productivity, while still others led to missed opportunities and in one case to radicalizing incommensurable stances. A minority of comparisons in other contexts did not lead to engagement, but could either still be fruitful or not productive at all. In conclusion, we summarize the consequences of engaging with epistemologies through the comparisons researchers make of their analyses in multivocal contexts, showing how epistemological encounters can help to bridge between isolated traditions that work on similar objects of study. A Multivocal Approach in the Analysis of Online Dialogue in the Language-focused Classroom in Higher Education
The study presented here is interested in understanding the ways in which social interaction in technologymediated institutional settings is constrained and afforded by what Pennycook defines as “critical moments” in the educational experience. Drawing on Social Learning Analytics and on the concepts of heteroglossia, contingency and chaining, this paper critically discusses a methodology that ...

In this paper I intend to examine several epistemological difficulties one quite naturally encounters within traditional semiotics, especially when trying to apply it to design (industrial design and product semantics in particular). This is a review of research on educational technology from a particular historical and theoretical perspective. It focuses on the research field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and does so based on the author’s personal experiences in that field. Starting with an overview of the changing role of technology in educational design, it then looks at the changing role of individ...

His conclusions, while sound, are not all that surprising: despite some scattered gestures in the direction of anthropology (his suggestion, for example, that a woman giving birth in secret might have been subjected to a charge of new-born child murder as a for...

Involving security in DevOps has been a challenge because traditional security methods have been unable to keep up with DevOps’ agility and speed. DevSecOps is the movement that works on developing and integrating modernized security methods that can keep up with DevOps. This study is meant to give an overview of what DevSecOps is, what implementing DevSecOps means, the benefits gained from Dev...
